Artist Statement

Renegade should be my middle name. I don’t like to follow directions!! My enjoyment comes from taking a medium and massaging it in a way that makes it come alive. Sometimes I find it necessary to take multiple media and see how they can work together to artistically communicate. In addition to quilting, I’ve endeavored to take photos and create thread painted pieces. I’ve also dabbled in using flowers as a medium on fabric. Each process expresses my love of nature and the world we live in.

Jeanne Brown is a Greer, SC fabric artist who incorporates a mixture of media to create something out of nothing. She spent over twenty-five years teaching English in New Jersey while always finding alternative avenues to nourish her creative spirit. Her love of fabric and tactile media began in her early twenties. She realized that she found accessories and quilts more rewarding than clothing because their “life expectancy” is greater—one outgrows clothes but quilts and art never change. Jeanne has been expressing her renegade artistic attitude for ten years. One of her most memorable artistic achievements is the creation of her “Tata” for Tatas on Trade, a Breast Cancer awareness endeavor. This piece now resides at the Gibbs Center in Spartanburg, SC.
