repurpose - all buzz words for processes of taking an object with one
purpose and altering it to create a new object with a different use,
or meaning, has been performed by humans for centuries. My fiber arts
and textile industry background easily offer a language to work with
in repurposing objects. The foundation of my recent work is to take a
manufactured object that has implied personal attachment and pull it
apart to make a sole contemporary object.
Childers grew up in Gaffney South Carolina, a former textile center
in upstate South Carolina. Childers completed a Bachelor of Fine
Arts in fiber arts from Savannah College of Art and Design.
Following graduation, she worked as a textile designer in
apparel and automotive fabrics. This past design work in
manufacturing has influenced her recent paintings, screen-prints,
has studied at the Savannah College of Art and
Design, Glasgow School of Art
in Scotland, and Clemson University. Her
work is part of the SCAD and Target collections.
