Artist Statement

Sustainability, upcycling, repurpose - all buzz words for processes of taking an object with one purpose and altering it to create a new object with a different use, or meaning, has been performed by humans for centuries. My fiber arts and textile industry background easily offer a language to work with in repurposing objects. The foundation of my recent work is to take a manufactured object that has implied personal attachment and pull it apart to make a sole contemporary object.

Robin Childers grew up in Gaffney South Carolina, a former textile center in upstate South Carolina. Childers completed a Bachelor of Fine Arts in fiber arts from Savannah College of Art and Design. Following graduation, she worked as a textile designer in apparel and automotive fabrics. This past design work in manufacturing has influenced her recent paintings, screen-prints, and installations.

Robin has studied at the Savannah College of Art and Design, Glasgow School of Art in Scotland, and Clemson University. Her work is part of the SCAD and Target collections.
